The Rindge Select Board has authorized Police Chief Todd Muilenberg to pursue a grant that would help bring an eighth full-time officer to town.
The Select Board approved Muilenberg’s request to seek the U.S. Department of Justice grant at a Tuesday board meeting. The grant, known as COPS Hiring Program Grant, would greatly reduce the cost to the town of hiring a full-time officer for three years.
“If we are successful and awarded the grant, it covers 75 percent of a new officer’s salary and benefits for three years, up to $125,000,” said Muilenberg.
“The town would be required to cover the other 25 percent and then fully fund the position for the fourth year.”
Muilenberg said the department lost funding for an eighth officer three years ago.
Muilenberg said the grant would offer a chance to increase the police force at a minimal cost to the town. The additional officer would help increase proactive patrolling, enhance traffic safety, and allow the department to better address the growing influx of illegal drugs, according to Muilenberg. He said the deadline for the application is June 23.
