Due to a series of rainouts and reschedules, the WLC and Conant girls’ tennis teams ended up playing each other twice last week. Unfortunately for the Warriors, they caught the Orioles right in the midst of one of their hottest streaks of all time.
“I think we are just a team that works together really well,” said Franka Clauss, a German exchange student who’s found a home in the No. 2 spot for Conant. “In doubles and in practice we always have a lot of fun, and we enjoy playing tennis. It’s not like we are really, really serious and we just want to win. We are okay with losing a game.”
The Orioles might be okay with losing, but they haven’t experienced any of it this season, and that trend continued on Thursday against the Warriors.
Conant’s Shannon Bennett and WLC’s Maddy Bacon faced off for what was likely the final time in their careers, with Bennett coming out victorious once again, 8-4. At No. 2, Clauss beat WLC’s Tatum Vander-Heyden, 8-2. Conant’s Alex Dunn beat WLC’s Suzie Lemire, 8-5. Megan Wheeler, Esther Varnum and Nicci Munroe also picked up wins for Conant.
The Orioles swept doubles play as well, meaning Conant is still yet to lose a single match this season. The Orioles (6-0) travel to Interlakes (3-6) Tuesday at 4 p.m. The Warriors (2-4) host Sanborn (4-3) Wednesday at 4 p.m.
