Two people were transported to the hospital, one airlifted, after a single vehicle crash early Saturday morning, according to police.

At 12:57 a.m., police were called to Nutting Road, west of Coleman Road, according to a press release. A 2007 Chevy Aveo, driven by Catherine Senecal, 24, of Hoosick Falls, New York, had hit a tree.

Senecalโ€™s passenger, Christopher Hildreth, 25, of Jaffrey, had stumbled from the scene of the accident to a nearby residence, according to Police Chief Bill Oswalt.

โ€œBoth [Hildreth and Senecalโ€™s] faces were covered in blood,โ€ said Oswalt. โ€œWhen police arrived, [Senecal] was unconscious, but breathing.โ€

Oswalt said both Hildreth and Senecal had โ€œserious injuries,โ€ although Senecalโ€™s were more severe. Hildreth was transported to Monadnock Community Hospital with a head injury and Senecal was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts with head, neck and leg injuries.

Police found the Aveo about 15 feet off the north side of the roadway, according to the release.

Senecal was located in the driverโ€™s seat. Jaffrey Fire and Rescue used extrication tools to remove her from the vehicle. N.H. State Police also assisted in the crash scene investigation.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the vehicle was traveling westbound on Nutting Road, when it failed to negotiate a turn in the road, which caused the car to travel off the road and collide with a tree. Both airbags were deployed and neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

Oswalt said that the department is โ€œconsidering other factorsโ€ for the cause of the accident, but so far has determined excessive speed to be a contributing factor. An investigation will continue to determine if other factors were present.
