To the editor:
I was very confused when I read Mr. Lindsey’s letter to the editor about St. Peter Church.
My family and I have been parishioners at Divine Mercy Parish (and St. Peter’s before that) and we look at the razing of St. Peter Church in a completely different way. It is because we have a strong parish community that we came together from three churches to build a new building for future generations. This shows how much we care about our Roman Catholic community and our region as a whole. It was a long and, at times, a difficult road to get to our new parish, but we have something that now meets our growing community and with a parish hall that is ADA compliant.
Like many in our church, I was sad to drive by and see the backhoe removing a wonderful physical church that has served so may Catholics for over100 years – and the place of so many wonderful memories for our family, Under excellent leadership of Msgr. Gerry, parish, new church, and financial committees, we have served our current and future parishioners with a new parish home.
As Auxiliary Bishop Francis J. Christian stated during his homily of the opening of the new church “A parish is the community and not a building.” I could not agree more with the good bishop.
