We need to support trans people
In the U.S., weโve seen over 900 anti-trans bills brought forward on local, state and federal levels. Itโs clear that those wishing to cause harm are willing to push for legislation that denies gender non-conforming humans their rights; why are we not seeing a push from our progressive representatives to guarantee that these rights are incontrovertible?
Massachusetts passed the Shield Law, guaranteeing peopleโs right to healthcare that aligns with the stateโs law. Why donโt we have laws that guarantee people rights to abortion or gender affirming care in New Hampshire?
Weโre lucky that Governor Ayotte chose to break from her party and veto HB148, but we shouldnโt need to rely on crossing our fingers that our governor will do the right thingโthis bill should have never made it to her desk. Unfortunately, Governor Ayotte didnโt continue standing up for all people of New Hampshire. She signed into law HB377 and HB712, bills that ban gender affirming care for our youth. It is disheartening that our representatives feel the need to strip people of their rights.
Our infrastructure is declining, the quality of our countryโs education is down, people canโt afford healthcare or electricity, the environment is worsening and the housing crisis continues. Yet, legislators are trying to strip the rights of gender non-conforming individuals? Youโre supposed to represent the people, not discriminate against them.
For the representatives who are fighting for human rights: thank you. But we need to do more, especially in New Hampshire. We need to stop playing defensively and performatively and start taking actions with long-term protections for the transgender community. People across the country are fighting for the trans community; we need to do the same here.
Call your representatives today and urge them to build long-term support for the transgender community.
