We need to support trans people

In the U.S., weโ€™ve seen over 900 anti-trans bills brought forward on local, state and federal levels. Itโ€™s clear that those wishing to cause harm are willing to push for legislation that denies gender non-conforming humans their rights; why are we not seeing a push from our progressive representatives to guarantee that these rights are incontrovertible?

Massachusetts passed the Shield Law, guaranteeing peopleโ€™s right to healthcare that aligns with the stateโ€™s law. Why donโ€™t we have laws that guarantee people rights to abortion or gender affirming care in New Hampshire?

Weโ€™re lucky that Governor Ayotte chose to break from her party and veto HB148, but we shouldnโ€™t need to rely on crossing our fingers that our governor will do the right thingโ€”this bill should have never made it to her desk. Unfortunately, Governor Ayotte didnโ€™t continue standing up for all people of New Hampshire. She signed into law HB377 and HB712, bills that ban gender affirming care for our youth. It is disheartening that our representatives feel the need to strip people of their rights.

Our infrastructure is declining, the quality of our countryโ€™s education is down, people canโ€™t afford healthcare or electricity, the environment is worsening and the housing crisis continues. Yet, legislators are trying to strip the rights of gender non-conforming individuals? Youโ€™re supposed to represent the people, not discriminate against them.

For the representatives who are fighting for human rights: thank you. But we need to do more, especially in New Hampshire. We need to stop playing defensively and performatively and start taking actions with long-term protections for the transgender community. People across the country are fighting for the trans community; we need to do the same here.

Call your representatives today and urge them to build long-term support for the transgender community.
