GIRLS’ SOCCER

Lebanon 2, ConVal 0

Lebanon and ConVal played a close game for 60 minutes Friday before the Raiders got a flukey goal and stole the momentum and the victory. Keeper Wrayana Covey was bumped in the goal mouth on a corner kick which deflected off her body and into the goal; Lebanon scored again minutes later to make the 2—0 final.

ConVal (0-2) is at Pelham Tuesday.

Derryfield 5, Conant 0

The Orioles showed a spark at Derryfield Friday but lost focus at times in the shutout loss.

“The girls came out and battled hard in the first half,” said assistant coach Cody Gadsby, subbing in for new head coach Devon Spirka, who was in COVID quarantine.

Midfielder Jordan Morace made excellent runs and won the 50/50 balls, Gadsby said, while on defense, outside backs Iris Hill and Helen Quill made great steps to the ball which stopped attacks.

Conant was down just 2-0 until Derryfield added three goals late in the game.

Kelly Williams made eight saves in net for the Orioles.

Conant (1-2) is at Monadnock Tuesday.

WLC 7, Mount Royal 1

WLC (1-1) hosts Hinsdale Tuesday at 4 p.m.

FIELD HOCKEY

Kingswood 1, ConVal 0

ConVal lost a tight night game on Stadium Field against Kingswood Thursday night. “It was an action-packed game with great plays made by both teams, all game,” head coach Kelly Shirk said.

Senior goalie Lydia Cleveland made eight saves but Kingswood was able to sneak one by for a 1-0 win.

Oyster River 2, ConVal 1

The Cougars took on Oyster River at home for their third game of the week Friday. ConVal scored their first goal of the season on a rebound, as senior Allie Hodgen knocked in senior Hayden Kaltsas’s shot in the second quarter to put the Cougars up 1-0.

Oyster River was able to score the equalizer with a few minutes remaining in the half.

Sophomore Abby Peters made a great defensive save to keep the score even in the third quarter, but Oyster River was able to capitalize late. ConVal had the ball in the Oyster River end as the clock ticked its final seconds, but were unable to strike.

Seniors Hodgen, Kaltsas and Laramie Wilson, and junior Ella Morris all took shots on goal and Lydia Cleveland made nine saves.

ConVal (0-3) is at Milford Tuesday.

Conant 4, Kearsarge 0

Coach Jackie Brown pointed to team chemistry after Thursday’s shutout win over Kearsarge that had the Orioles out to a 2-0 start on the year, as many wins as all of last season.

Keeper Abby Quill got her first varsity shutout in net.

Conant goals were scored by Sophia Spingola, Violet Bennett, Megan Newton and Rylee Herr, with assists by Herr, Graecen Kirby and Maddy Bergeron.

Conant (2-0) hosts Stevens Tuesday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Lebanon 2, ConVal 1

The ConVal boys played defending state champion Lebanon down to the wire Friday, but lost 2-1.

“Great effort overall by the team,” said head coach Scott Daniels.

Ryan Close scored with an assist to Ethan Kinney.

Carter Rousseau’s rocket-shot with 30 seconds left hit the post and came back out.

“I bet that ball flattened into the shape of a Frisbee,” said Lebanon coach Rob Johnstone.

ConVal (1-1) hosts Pelham Tuesday.

Conant 1, Derryfield 0

Conant moved to 2-0 Thursday with a 1-0 win over Derryfield, who gave the Orioles fits with their passing game, coach Tom Harvey said.

“Every year we see a great passing team in Derryfield,” Harvey said.

Sophomore Ben Sawyer, junior Jordan Nagle and junior Sean Farmer held down the Conant defensive line, and the two teams were scoreless at the half before the Orioles made some changes. 

“We wanted to play bigger in the front and see if we could get something going,” Harvey said; so, he Sawyer began to carry the ball into the opponent’s box and was fouled, giving Conant a direct kick, which Jacob Sawyer hit for the 1-0 win.

Conant (2-0) hosts Monadnock on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

 

Mascenic 2, Newmarket 1

The Vikings won their home opener at Mascenic Friday to stay undefeated on the season in Division IV. Gabriel Hileman and Ezra Haavisto scored for Mascenic and Quinn Krook got the win in net. 

Mascenic (2-0) hosts Somersworth Tuesday. 

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

ConVal 3, Kennett 0

ConVal swept visiting Kennett to win their home opener Thursday night.  

“The atmosphere was upbeat after the ConVal JV win and the stands were full of people!” coach Amanda Hinton said. The Cougars fought the entire night and were able to capture the 3-0 victory with set scores of 25-17, 25-11, and 25-23.

Leading the Cougar offense was junior captain middle hitter Emma Rodenhiser with 12 kills, three blocks, and three aces. Freshman middle hitter Ivy Armstrong-McEvoy had four kills, two blocks, and two aces, while senior captain setter Kendall Sullivan added four kills, 10 assists, and four aces. Junior setter Aria Laurent had seven assists and five aces. Defensively, senior libero Samantha Henderson had seven digs and 13 successful serve receives and Rodenhiser had 10 successful digs.

ConVal (1-0) is at St. Thomas Aquinas Friday. 

Belmont 3, Conant 1

The Orioles were able to take a set in their first-ever varsity volleyball contest before losing at Belmont Friday. Conant (1-0) hosts their first varsity home game Tuesday at 6 p.m.

 

Mascenic 3, Epping 0

Mascenic looked like championship contenders again in their season opener Friday, sweeping Epping to begin their hopeful journey towards another state championship appearance after losing in the finals last season. Set scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-9.

Lyla Buxton had a career-high 16 kills; Hannah Zina had a solid night with seven kills and six third-set aces and setter Kenzie Cormier had 27 assists, two kills and two aces.

Golf

ConVal improves

The Cougars looked good and scored 60 points at Crotched Mountain Thursday, but fell to Derryfield (73) and Lebanon (72) while beating John Stark (28).

Wyatt Burbank scored 24 points and was tied for medalist once again playing with two of the best players in the division, coach Mike Young said, in Derryfield’s Calvin Reilly (24) and Lebanon’s Roy Shapard (23). 

Kermit Pope (14), Caden Robbins (9) and Kiernan King (13) scored much better than their previous matches, Young said.

ConVal is home at Crotched again Thursday. 

 

Mascenic squeaks by Gilford

The Vikings needed a tiebreaker to get by Gilford at their home opener at the Shattuck Thursday, and they got it, winning with a 58 over the Eagles (58), Campbell (41) and Newport (23). 

Josiah Hakala was medalist with 25 points. 

Mascenic is home again Thursday. 

CROSS-COUNTRY

ConVal at Coach K Invitational

ConVal raced at Hollis-Brookline’s Coach K Invitational Saturday morning. The girls’ team placed third with senior captain Makenna Proctor leading the team (18th, 26:28). Freshmen Whitney Adiar (24th, 30:00), Sara Mackie (27th, 32:32), Sarah Brace (30th, 35:54), and Brielle Proctor (31st, 39:07) rounded out the young team.

The ConVal boys were led by sophomore William Simard (18:42), who finished a strong 12th overall in his first high school cross-country race. Nathan Klonel (27th, 20:46), Nathaniel Mao (37th, 22:52), Mason Deschenes (38th, 23:04), and Jake Alonso (43rd, 24:58) rounded out the top five runners for the Cougars.

 

Mascenic hosts Valhalla Rising relays

The Vikings hosted their first home meet of the season Friday against Monadnock, Conant, Derryfield and Hinsdale in an unorthodox relay-style race in which Mascenic pulled out team wins on both the boys’ and girls’ side.

The Vikings also had the fastest duo of the day in Skye Lambert and Erin O’Shea. 

Mascenic hosts their homecoming race Friday, Sept. 16.
