Sophomore and defending individual state champion Josiah Hakala picked up where he left off, shooting a -3 31 to score 30 points and take the medalist position. Freshman Brody Shaw had an “awesome” first match, coach Jeff Hakala said, shooting a 38 to score 23 points. Tyrus Krook had a career-best match, shooting a 45 and scoring 16 points. Casey Brox rounded out the scoring with a 12-point 49.

Rowen Vautour and TJ Edgar both showed promise, coach Hakala said, but finished outside the scoring.

Mascenic (3-0) was scheduled to play at White Mountains Monday and hosts a home match on Thursday, Sept. 1.

The ConVal golf team got things underway at Crotched Mountain Wednesday, where the Cougars pulled out a win and senior Wyatt Burbank tied for first overall.

Derryfield won the match with 75 points; Coe-Brown had 68, ConVal 36 and Bishop Brady 35.

Burbank, who was dedicated to golf over the summer and played in the state amateur tournament, shot a 41, good for 22 points and a first-place tie with Derryfield’s Mike Grunbeck.

Also taking the course for ConVal were Kermit Pope (6), Kiernan King (3), Noah Stewart (3) and Caden Robbins (5).

ConVal (1-2) is back in action at home Thursday, Sept. 1.

Conant tops Campbell

The Orioles started their season in Division IV by beating Campbell at the Shattuck last Wednesday.

Marcus Somero led the way, shooting a 46; Jordan Ketola shot a 47, Draven Seppala 49, Grant Ketola 50, Montana Niemala 54 and Chance Derosier 55.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Sanborn 3, Conant 2 (2 OT)

The Conant girls’ soccer team played an exciting season opener under new head coach Devon Spirka on Saturday, losing 3-2 in double overtime on a golden goal at Sanborn.

Both Conant goals were scored by freshman Riley Vitello on assists from Irelynd Aucoin and Rachel DeWees.

Goalkeeper Kelly Williams had a great game, Spirka said, with 11 saves and some really clutch decision-making to come out to win some 50/50 balls.

“She was tough today,” Spirka said, “but more importantly, she remained mentally tough after the goals scored against her. That’s a huge feat and important moving forward.”

Conant played the entire game and two overtimes with only one substitute.

“They worked hard through the adversity of having one sub,” Spirka said. “I think this group doesn’t realize yet how admirable playing any game with only one sub is. They don’t stop giving it their all, and that’s so awesome to see as a coach.”

Spirka said their team defense was strong, thanks to Izzie Rollins. who held down the fort defensively with added hustle and aggressiveness from Iris Hill and extra support from DeWees and Helen Quill.

Conant (0-1) hosts WLC Tuesday at 4 p.m.
