Dennis O’Connor, a scholar on Joseph Lindon Smith, will present “Excavating Joseph Lindon Smith Works” at the Dublin Historical Society’s annual meeting on Saturday, Aug. 20.
In the last quarter of the 20th century more than 60 painted works by Dublin artist Joseph Lindon Smith, held as part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, were transferred to the Fitchburg (Massachusetts) Art Museum for storage. The majority of the pieces have remained out of public view since.
In the summer of 2015, O’Connor and collector William McCluskey, with generous support from Smith’s granddaughter Linden Hughes Gaspar, underwrote a project to bring these stored canvases out of their storage boxes. Along with the pieces already on display in Fitchburg, the entire set was documented in state-of-the-art digital capture for future access and study.
This assemblage of Smith’s Egyptian-themed works will be showcased and discussed in O’Connor’s presentation.
The meeting will be held in the Fountain Arts Building at Dublin School at 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to park at the end of William North Road, off Dublin Road.
All are welcome to attend.
