The Hancock Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at an unoccupied building on Stoddard Road around 3 a.m. on Friday.
It took about half an hour to get the fire under control as the building was fully involved when they arrived, First Assistant Fire Chief John Pirkey said Friday afternoon.
Peterborough, Stoddard, Nelson and Bennington fire departments all provided assistance during the fire, which was completely extinguished after about two hours. The building was a complete loss, according to a Hancock police post on Facebook.
“[The building] is barely classified as a house. It was a one-room shack with a low and deteriorating roof,” Pirkey said. “It hasn’t been occupied in at least 15 years.”
Peterborough Ambulance responded to standby at the scene and Hancock police provided traffic control until the road was reopened at about 5 a.m.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, Pirkey said.
