Rescuers carried a 28-year-old hiker nearly a mile down Mount Monadnock on Saturday, Sept. 19, after she suffered a lower leg injury on the White Dot Trail.
Sara Grube, of Somerville, Mass., was ascending the mountain when the injury occurred. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Mountain Patrol Rangers received a call for help from Grube’s companion at 12:27 p.m. Rangers reached Grube above the trail’s Upper Junction by 1:03 p.m. and provided medical aid. After determining that Grube could not walk down the mountain, rangers packaged her into a litter and called for additional assistance.
Conservation Officers, the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, and fire department members from Jaffrey, Peterborough, Troy, and Marlborough assisted with the carry-out over difficult terrain. Rescuers navigated the White Dot, Paradise Valley, Purgatory, and Side Foot trails and reached the Old Toll Road at approximately 8 p.m. A Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance transported Grube to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene for treatment.
The state’s Hike Safe Card and Search & Rescue Fund funded the rescue response.
