Peterborough will provide 24-hour police coverage to Hancock while that town continues its search for a new police chief.
The Peterborough Select Board voted to approve the police department’s contract with Hancock at its Tuesday night meeting. The town of Hancock gave final approval to the contract Monday night.
“The contract will be the same as the one we have with Sharon except that it includes language that this is interim, month-to-month coverage until Hancock is able to hire a new chief,” Peterborough Town Administrator Nicole MacStay said.
Hancock Town Administrator Jonathan Coyne said the town had been considering several options for coverage as it rebuilds its department following the resignation of Terry Choate.
“We had a couple of proposals and different ideas we were looking at, and Peterborough fit our needs a little better,” Coyne said Monday. “We will be receiving coverage from Peterborough and from our own part-time officers.”
The Hancock Select Board had previously discussed working with the Antrim Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department.
“As of today, we will not be receiving coverage from Antrim or from the county sheriff,” Coyne said Monday.
Choate resigned April 20 due to certification issues. The town is working with the New Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police to identify a new candidate for chief.
