Police identified the man who died following a crash in Mason on Wednesday as John Delaney, 86, of Townsend, Mass.

Delaney was a well-known antiques dealer and founder of Delaney Antique Clocks in Townsend.

Police released Delaney’s name on Tuesday, following notification of his family.

According to police, Delaney was involved in a crash at about 12:41 p.m., on Wednesday afternoon, when his vehicle left the roadway on Barrett Hill Road in Mason, striking a tree. He was transported by ambulance to a landing zone in Greenville, and then by MedFlight helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Delaney died in the hospital on March 12, the day after the crash. Mason Police Sgt. Richard Fortin said investigators are still trying to determine what caused him to leave the roadway and his exact cause of death.

According to Delaney’s obituary, he grew up in Fitchburg, Mass., graduating from Fitchburg High School and Fitchburg State University. He had previously worked as a teacher, including as a math teacher at Leominster High School, and since 1976 had been an antique dealer, specializing in clocks.

He and his wife Barbara Delaney had two children and five grandchildren.
