The Monadnock Center for History and Culture will host a candlelight open house at the Phoenix Mill House on Friday, Jan. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m., offering visitors a glimpse of life in the 1830s.
The Samuel and Nancy Prescott family will welcome guests as they would have nearly 200 years ago, with the house lit only by candlelight and warmed by a fireplace. Interpreters will share stories about daily life in the millworker’s home and explain New Year’s traditions and superstitions of the period, including the role of the “first-footer.”
Visitors will be offered warm mulled cider and popcorn prepared on the hearth.
The Phoenix Mill House is located behind the Monadnock Center’s main building at 19 Grove St. Admission is by donation.
