By invitation only

To the Editor,

Imagine that you wake up some morning at home and hear odd noises downstairs.
When you descend in your bathrobe, you find strangers rummaging around in your
kitchen. Wouldnโ€™t you call the police?

Imagine further that these strangers call their friends and tell them to come over โ€“ your
fridge is well stocked and your living room furniture is very comfy. Before the police
arrive, you have a house full of people that you donโ€™t know and who donโ€™t even speak
your language.

It can feel virtuous to be welcoming in the abstract or when it is someone elseโ€™s home
that is being invaded, but when a stranger enters your house, donโ€™t you think that it
should be by invitation only.
