Members of the Plowshare Farm lifesharing community in Greenfield and local friends will present the 23rd annual Shepherdsโ Play on Monday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. at Union Congregational Church, UCC. The event is free and open to the public.
The production features a diverse cast of actors with and without developmental differences. Most performers are from Plowshare Farm, a lifesharing community where people of varying capabilities live and work together. The play has its roots in the worldwide Camphill movement, which includes more than 120 communities in over 20 countries.
The abridged medieval pageant is based on the Oberufer โShepherdsโ Play,โ a mystery play telling the story of humble shepherds who leave their flocks on a dark winter night to follow a guiding star. The story leads them to a stable where themes of wonder and faith unfold. Audience members are invited to join a sing-along between scenes.
The Shepherdsโ Play began locally as a small production following Monday community suppers at Union Congregational Church. Over more than two decades, it has grown into a community tradition drawing residents from across the region.
