The Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church will undertake a major renovation of its sanctuary to improve accessibility while preserving the building’s 19th-century character.
The redesign, which meets federal Americans with Disabilities Act standards, includes lowering the chancel, adding a ramp, improving access points and upgrading wiring for new sound and lighting systems. The most visible change — removal of the sanctuary’s high pulpit — has already been completed.
Historic renovation specialist Sterling Abram, who worked on last year’s smaller accessibility updates involving four pews, will repurpose the pulpit for contemporary use. C.P. Laroche Construction Company LLC will handle the chancel renovation, new doors, ramp installation and electrical upgrades.

Rev. Lane Fisher said the strong support for the project reflects the congregation’s desire to balance historic preservation with its commitment to welcome everyone. The Bullfinch-style church, built in 1826 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has undergone several renovations over the past century, including construction of the Parish Hall in 1930 and elevator installation in the 1990s.
Work is expected to begin soon after the new year and finish within three months. Fundraising information is available at uupeterborough.org/chancel_donation.
