Don’t change the speed limit

A recent traffic study shows drivers speed along roads and streets here in Peterborough, and it would be too much for the police to handle speeders. It recommended increasing the speed limit to 40 or 45 from the Route 101 and Route 202 intersection up the hill. With emergency and highway vehicles exiting onto Route 101, drivers will have to slow down or will they? Then they pick up speed heading west for 100 feet, only to have to slow to 15 mph at the rotary for Shaw’s/CVS.

Why not keep the speed at 40 or 45 through the rotary? I had a Massachusetts vehicle slam on the horn and flash lights at me because I slowed to the rotary speed to exit. They wanted to keep driving 40.

There will be too many accelerations and slow down speeds from the intersection at the bottom of the hill to the rotary. Why do we want vehicles to have the right to speed through the busy 101 and 202 intersection with all the crosswalks? Why have a rotary if people can drive the speed that they choose, which is not safe for those of us making an exit.

Keeping a reasonable speed limit does not keep speeders from driving at whatever speed they choose, but it keeps most reasonable drivers alert to the law. Let’s not change the law to accommodate those who want their will on the roads, making it less safe for us.
