Sargent Center’s Future is Uncertain
I write to update the community on information provided in an article published in the
Monadnock Ledger-Transcript on August 28, 2025, that highlights the award of a federal
grant to support the acquisition of the Sargent Center by the Harris Center for
Conservation Education. Despite the USDA’s award announcement, there remains no
agreement or contract between the parties for the purchase of the property, and the
current owner, Boston University, has withdrawn from negotiations with us to investigate
their options. We are disappointed but respect their decision. We remain steadfast in
our commitment to conserving the property as a refuge for people and wildlife, and we
are hopeful that we can resume negotiations on a solution that works for all: the BU,
HCCE, the community, and the environment.
