A new resident-only parking area has opened at the Sand Hill Reservoir in Wilton, along with new trails and an information kiosk.
Now known as the Sand Hill Reservoir Recreation Area, the area is open to the public for hiking, fishing, swimming and boating.
On Oct. 15, during a town-wide Day of Service, a day of volunteerism in several areas of town, the reservoir was one of the places where volunteers dedicated their time.
The parking lot, a new addition to the site, is restricted to Wilton residents with registered vehicle stickers. The parking area can be accessed off Isaac Frye Highway, and car stickers are available, at no charge, to any Wilton resident or taxpayer with proof of vehicle registration.
The parking area is open year-round, from dawn until dusk.
Along with the waterway, there are trails that have been opened along logging roads in the area, which will be maintained for hiking. A trail bridge off Sand Hill Road has been added to provide access along two new trails, linking the new parking area and the peninsula.
As a town property, the reservoir has carry-in/carry-out rules, and camping, fires, littering and alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the property. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash and whin their owner’s control at all times.
