New Hampshire is devoid of werewolves – at least according to the title of a short film being shot in Peterborough and Rindge over the past week.
Manchester-based film company Fractory Studios, visited the region to shoot its upcoming “Gothic horror” short film “There are No Wolves in New Hampshire” over the course of five days. Director Steven A. White, who previously has worked with Bruce Campbell on the 2007 film “My Name is Bruce,” said he wanted to “take advantage of the local flavor” and wanted a film that was set in the Granite State as the first of an upcoming anthology series.
White said he wrote the screenplay, based on the 1905 short story “The Grey Wolf” by George MacDonald, to cater to the areas he and his team were shooting in. The film is entirely shot in Peterborough and Rindge, which he said provides the perfect scenery he is looking for. In Rindge, White said he was doing some shooting on a pond that offered the plant life, the water and a hut on the property.
“You can’t pass on that kind of background,” White said.
In Peterborough, White said the house he filmed in has an original 1760s fireplace, and a portion of the house is all original, as well.
White said his 12-minute short film features monsters, love, a witch and a twist.
“What I really love about this story is it is an epic tale in miniature form,” White said.
On a personal level, White said he is big on myth and fairy tales, which is what drew him to the story. White described MacDonald as “[J. R. R.] Tolkien before Tolkien.”

White said the short film is based on a hiker who discovers a werewolf, and when the hiker gets closer it is actually a woman. The hiker is then transported through time to a pre-Revolutionary cottage and does not know what is going on around him.
During filming, White said he was going as “old-school as we can” by using mostly practical effects and as few digital effects as possible.
This film, White said, is the start of an anthology series connected through demons. After this one is done, he said he will try to secure funding for subsequent films. White said he is not entirely sure when the film will be released or where people will be able to watch it yet, as it is too soon to tell. He said this short film could potentially be turned into a feature film that showcases all of the short films together.
