It’s time again for scarecrows to line Main Street and Peterborough Street, as this weekend residents are encouraged to participate in TEAM Jaffrey’s annual Scarecrows on the Common event.

The event, scheduled for Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Main Street Common, provides residents the tools – including clothes, hay and a stand – to build a scarecrow, which can be left to decorate the common. Scouting of America Troop 33B assisted in building the scarecrow crosses. Those who have already made scarecrows can also participate. Cost to build or submit a scarecrow is $5 and includes everything needed to build one, though residents are encouraged to bring their own costumes for their scarecrow. Clothes and accessories are available for residents to choose for their scarecrows, donated by Threads of Hope.

Trophies will be awarded to the best scarecrow in the categories of business, nonprofit and community-submitted scarecrows.

In addition to building scarecrows, there will also be vendors, a craft fair, family games and town specials during the event. Among the food vendors will be the Yalla Lebanese food truck

During the event, residents can enter to win a raffle for a free ton of pellets. Tickets are $5 per ticket, or five tickets for $20. Tickets are also available on the TEAM Jaffrey website, teamjaffrey.org, under the Scarecrows on the Common event.

Downtown businesses, including those on Main Street and beyond, may be offering “downtown deals” during the event.

Sponsors for the event include Savings Bank of Walpole, the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary Club, Scotty’s Potties, Millipore Sigma, Apollo Steel, Monad Doc Health Direct, Hill Family Insurance Agency, Lignetics Group, Threads, Belletetes, Holly Royce Reich of Royce Farms and Murdock Farms.

In other fall-themed events, TEAM Jaffrey is hosting a fall downtown decorating contest for local businesses. Businesses are encouraged to decorate their business or window display, and keep the display up through at least Nov. 1. Winners of the contest will be announced on Nov. 2.
