Plaid Friday lived up to its name Friday in Peterborough.

The promotion encourages people to support local businesses the day after Thanksgiving and wear plaid while doing it. At Anytime Apparel, Hannah Terriault of Dover and Page Powell of New York scored free gifts – plaid scarves – from owner Melissa Carson by spending over $50 at her store.

“I love coming up from NYC to shop local where my family lives,” Powell said as the pair headed out.

“Keep shopping!” said Carson as she rang up the sales.

Across the street at Alice Blue, patron Vicky Rank of Rindge sported plaid and recalled her role in promoting support for local businesses on this day years ago.

“There was a contest for a catchphrase for the idea, and mine won. ‘Stay around and shop our towns,’ was the winning slogan,” Rank said.

Gail Huntley of Alice Blue said toward midday that three people had received discounts by wearing plaid to the store. Not wearing plaid didn’t stop Dublin resident Grisel Levene from contemplating a necklace at the store.

At The Toadstool Bookshop, owner Emerson Sistare said that business was “Good! Good!” the day after Thanksgiving.

Back in the music section, Lowell Morris cashed out Brandon Mapes of Burke, Vt., who purchased some vinyl.

“We’ve got family in Harrisville and are on our way to Massachusetts, but love stopping here,” said Mapes.

Steele’s had a loyal customer in Susan Wallis of Dublin Friday.

“I wouldn’t go anywhere else for this,” said Wallis as Jessica Littles bagged her seasonal decorations.

Ringing patrons up at Belletetes in Peterborough, Tina Magui said that business had been steady all day. Hancock’s James Gardner kept the pace going by picking up some plumbing supplies and some M&Ms for his boys Tyler and Timmy.
