Peterborough’s Rite Aid store is scheduled to close Tuesday, May 6, at 8 p.m.

“The decision to close a store is not one we take lightly. While we have had to make difficult business decisions over the past several months to improve our business and optimize our retail footprint, we are committed to becoming financially and operationally healthy,” Rite Aid spokeswoman Alicja Wojczyk stated. “Demand for our products and services remains strong, and we continue to serve our customers with the same high-quality service they have come to expect from us. We believe we are taking the right approach to becoming more agile as we meet the health and wellness needs of customers in the communities we serve.”

Amy Thibeault, a spokesperson for CVS Health, stated Wednesday that CVS in Peterborough has purchased the Peterborough Rite Aid’s prescription files.

“All files will be transferred to our pharmacy at 125 Dublin Road, with patient service beginning on Wednesday, May 7. The transfer will be seamless for patients,” Thibeault stated.

The Rite Aid national chain declared bankruptcy in 2023, partly due the impact of a lawsuit which found the chain guilty of filling “unnecessary” prescription for opioids, and may be preparing to file again, according to the Wall Street Journal. Rite Aid has cited inflation and competition as causes for the bankruptcy.

The Peterborough store is the only store in New Hampshire included in the current round of closings. The Keene store has already closed.
