The Monadnock Chorus will present the New England premiere of “We Are Phoenix,” an original work by Minneapolis composer Timothy Takach, on May 10 and 11 at 4 p.m. at the Peterborough Town House, 1 Grove St.

Tickets are $25 for adults, and free for students. Tickets are available at monadnockchorus.org.

“It’s a real honor to perform not only the New Hampshire but the New England premiere of this piece,” said Morgan Bothwell, artistic director of the Monadnock Chorus. “The chorus really has a handle on it, and we are ready. It is amazing, when you put it all together and give it a chance to breathe, how it really flows.”

Artists will include soprano soloist Jennifer Bates and the Boston-based Opus String Quartet, with violinists An-Chi Lin and Cheng-Yeh Tsou, violist Jason Wang and cellist Pin-Hsuan Chen. The chorus will also performing “Earth Song,” by Frank Ticheli; “O Primavera, gioventù dell’anno,” by Claudio Monteverd; and “The Road Home,” by Stephen Paulus.

As a result of performing the New England premiere of “We Are Phoenix,” the Monadnock Chorus has also been invited to perform the piece at Carnegie Hall and in London.

“We are super excited about that. We will be figuring out in the next few weeks how many of the group are able to take part and working out the numbers,” Bothwell said.

Monadnock Chorus is part of a national consortium of choruses which regularly works with Takach. The consortium commissioned the composer to create an original work to be performed in spring 2025. According to Bothwell, Takach already had the concept for the 45-minute work that would become “We Are Phoenix” when he was approached by the consortium.

“Tim wanted to create a mixture of pieces he had already written and new pieces around this theme he had been thinking about,” Bothwell said. “‘We Are Phoenix’ incorporates works from the dawn of time up to modern times. There are elements from Norse mythology and the story of Ragnarok. There is poetry, and there are elements that are contemporary. The piece has thematic elements, as well. Takach wanted the audience to be able to listen to the this piece and feel ‘this is home.’”

While “We Are Phoenix” also has a visual element designed by the composer, the Monadnock Chorus will perform without visual accompaniment.

“The Peterborough Town House is so beautiful and historic has such wonderful natural light. We would never want to cover that up or take away from that beauty, so we we don’t need the visual element. That works better for an enclosed concert hall,” Bothwell said.

Bothwell says the chorus is “not shy about performing new work.”

“I love modern composers. This is such a gem; it is an evolving thing. With contemporary pieces, we can ask the composers about their work, and I love that. Tim already had this idea for this work; he wanted to make a mixture of pieces he had already written and new pieces,” he said.

Bothwell, who teaches and conducts chorus at both Keene State and Franklin Pierce University, performs in operas and vocal ensembles throughout New England.

The Monadnock Chorus, which was founded in 1959, performs twice a year, in December and May, with ticketed performances. The chorus currently has 65 to 75 registered members, including about 15 tenors and basses, 20 altos and 20 sopranos. A small group, the Monadnock Chorus Chamber Singers, performs in the region six times a year.

All singers are welcome in the chorus, and no auditions are required. Rehearsals for fall 2025 will begin in September, Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Union Congregational Church in Peterborough, 33 Concord St. Rehearsals continue throughout the fall, culminating in a weekend of performances at the Peterborough Town House in early December.
