The Monadnock Center for History and Culture will host a candlelight open house in the Phoenix Mill House on Friday, Jan. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 19 Grove St., Peterborough.

Admission is free, with donations encouraged.

Costumed interpreters portraying the Prescott family will offer hot mulled cider from the kitchen hearth and share how the family celebrated the new year in the 1830s. Visitors can learn about traditions of the time, including the significance of a dark-haired man crossing the threshold on New Year’s Day.

The Phoenix Mill House, located behind the Monadnock Center’s main building, once served as the overseer’s home for the Phoenix Mill, a former textile mill that stood at Main and Grove streets.
