ANTRIMGrant to talk family shoemaking history

Antrim Historical Society will host a talk by Molly Grant of the Cordwainer Shop at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the Presbyterian Church Hall, 73 Main St., Antrim. The event is free and open to the public.

Grant will discuss her family’s 100-year-old custom shoemaking business, which traces its roots to Edward Matthews’ Homestead Guild on Turner Hill Road in Antrim during the 1930s and 1940s. Matthews, Grant’s father-in-law, taught farming, crafting and shoemaking.

Grant continues the craft today from her studio in Canterbury, where she makes handmade footwear and teaches nationwide. Her presentation will follow the Cordwainer story from Antrim to Boston, Yellow Springs, Ohio; Walden Pond; and back to New Hampshire.
