Mason deliberative session voters approve school warrant

In a short deliberative session on Saturday, Mason residents passed the school warrant to the ballot without any changes.
In a meeting lasting about a half hour, there were no amendments to the district’s warrant, which consists of five main articles this year.
The proposed budget for the coming year is $3.9 million, with a default budget of $3.8 million. The proposed budget is almost level with the previous year’s budget, representing a $6,235 change, or 0.16%.
The warrant includes requests for additions to the capital reserve funds, all of which are proposed to come from the end-of-year fund balance, rather than from taxation. The requests include $45,000 for the fund for assisting educationally disabled children, and $20,000 for building and grounds maintenance.
Two separate articles address the unanticipated tuition cost fund. After completing Mason Elementary School, Mason students are tuitioned to the Milford School District. The fund is intended to cover additional costs associated with students moving into the district or transferring from private to public school mid-year.
One article seeks to change the purpose of that fund, to allow for increases in tuition costs “associated with an increased school enrollment or unexpected tuition costs,” and would also allow the School Board to expend from the fund. It requires a 2/3 majority vote to change the purpose of a capital reserve fund.
In a separate article, the district also seeks $80,000 for the fund.
All articles will be voted on at the Mason Elementary School on March 11. Polls open at 11 a.m. and will remain open through 7 p.m. In addition to warrant items, the district will also vote for officers, including two school board members for three-year terms and the district treasurer.
