Three hikers were rescued on Mount Monadnock Friday night after getting lost near the summit in temperatures that felt like minus-10 degrees with the wind chill.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game, Monadnock Park staff contacted the agency just before 5 p.m. about the lost hikers, who were unprepared for the impending darkness and cold temperatures.
Monadnock Park staff, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team and New Hampshire Fish and game conservation officers began rescue efforts, including calling the hikers to help them find the trail and get below the tree line before it got dark.
Once the hikers made it to tree line, they were unable to continue, as they did not have lights. Rescuers contacted the hikers – identified as 63-year-old Siri O’Connor and 50-year-old Somjak Weerapit, both of Quincy, Mass., and 37-year-old Phromthep Khankaew of Thailand – and provided gear to help with their descent.
Due to the lack of warm clothing and exposure to extreme cold, O’Connor’s condition deteriorated on the descent. Rescue crews stopped and gave warm fluids and aided in warming O’Connor, but due to her lack of strength and exposure to the cold, they determined that the safest and most-efficient way to get her off the mountain would be to carry her the remaining 1.3 miles.
Crews assisted Weerapit and Khankaew down under their own power, arriving at the trailhead at approximately 8:30 p.m. The crews carrying O’Connor arrived at approximately 9:48 p.m., and she was transported by Jaffrey Ambulance to Monadnock Community Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.
Fish and Game officials encourage outdoor enthusiasts to check the weather forecast and prepare for the current winter weather conditions.
