Qualifying Peterborough residents may be eligible for up to $3,300 in reimbursement funds for energy-efficient home upgrades, thanks to a $700,000 U.S. Department of Energy Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant secured by the town.
The grant will fund a HeatSmart program for Peterborough and Harrisville. Peterborough’s program kicks off Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with an event at the Peterborough Town House.
“We are really hoping to meet people where they are and to let them know this grant is available, and to get people thinking about energy efficiency in their homes,” said Trisha Cheever, Peterborough’s energy and community planner.
The rebates are available to qualifying low- and moderate-income homeowners. Peterborough is partnering with Harrisville, whose residents are also eligible to apply for the rebates.
According to Cheever, the Peterborough Renewable Energy Project wrote the grant and designated the funds to the town. The committee also collaborated with the Harrisville Energy & Electric Aggregation Committee to form the partnership.
“They did a great deal of legwork to get this grant. It’s a Peterborough grant, but we are partnering with Harrisville,” Cheever said.
Residents can also apply for grant funds to cover tuition for courses that teach ways to improve home energy efficiency, as well as classes for those interested in entering energy efficiency professions within the Monadnock region. These classes will be offered by MAxT Makerspace.

Cheever, Town Planner Danica Melone and Department of Energy fellow Alicia DeBruin will manage the program for Peterborough, alongside PREP volunteers.
At Saturday’s kickoff event at the Town House, residents can connect with local contractors, community organizations and energy-efficiency resources while learning about upgrades that may benefit their homes.
Additional events include Energy Efficiency Trivia at Post & Beam Brewing in Peterborough on Tuesday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., and a screening of “Down to Earth with Zac Efron” at diVINE on Main on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Eligible home energy-efficiency upgrades include weatherization, energy audits, electric panel and wiring upgrades, electric or induction stoves, heat pump air conditioners/heaters, heat pump water heaters and heat pump clothes dryers. The reimbursement program is available for single-family homes, and renters are encouraged to discuss participation with their landlords.
Harrisville will host its events on Monday, Jan. 20, and a kickoff on Saturday, Jan. 25.
