Dublin faces pushback over transfer station sticker policy

Individuals have been challenging the authority at the town transfer station when they’ve been arriving with their trash and recyclables, according to Superintendent John McManus.
At Monday’s Select Board meeting, McManus said he has received pushback from people bringing their loads to the station in vehicles do not display the required sticker.
“There are still people coming to the dump without stickers,” McManus said.
When he explains this requirement, McManus said the response is not always cordial.
“I’m getting, ‘You can’t do that. I pay my taxes,’ ” McManus said.
Select Board member Carole Monroe said the sticker policy exists because people from elsewhere were dumping their trash in town.
“Turn them away,” she said regarding people who attempt to enter the facility without a sticker.
“What if they dump their stuff there anyway?” McManus asked.

“Take a picture of their car and call the police,” said board Chair Chris Raymond.
Electronic waste, which includes computer monitors, modems and lithium batteries, is accumulating at the site and in need of disposal, McManus said. The board requested that he nail down a cost of disposal for these items.
He said that air conditioners left at the site also pose an issue, as they must be drained of Freon. The town has sought a vendor who can complete this procedure, but has yet to find one.
In other news, Raymond said that a sign for the Avenues recovery facility in town is actually on town land.
“Avenues’ sign is on town property. It has to be removed,” he said. “This is according to their surveyor. Mike Borden, Dublin’s Building and Code Enforcement official will be asked to address it with them.”
The proliferation of political signs in town prompted the board to review ordinances regarding limits to size and quantity on individual property sites.
“You can’t have more than one,” said Raymond. “If you’re in violation, they all have to go. I’m getting hollered at from all angles.”
