Students at Dublin Christian Academy were nailing their lines at Tuesday’s rehearsal leading up to their production of the Thornton Wilder’s “The Matchmaker” this week.

After a scheduled opening Wednesday, the play will be performed Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m., and features successful-but-difficult Horace Vandergelder, who retains a matchmaker to find a wife. Once Horace and his entourage arrive in New York, romantic chaos ensues.

In a dress rehearsal Tuesday, Horace, played by Henrick L’Esperance, tried to quell the histrionics of his daughter, played by Amy Chi, whose tantrum is in response to Horace’s rejection of her choice of a suitor.

Sarah Katkla, DCA’s fine arts director and music teacher, chose and directs the play. “I wanted something that the students could sink their teeth into,” she said Tuesday. “You want to see the students grow in the course of the production.”

Best known for “Our Town,” which Wilder based on Peterborough and wrote at MacDowell, “The Matchmaker” was written the same year – 1938 – under the title “The Merchant of Yonkers,” but was revised and given a new title by Wilder in 1954.

“It’s a joyful comedy that celebrates life and all its connections, which are very important these days,” said Katka.

The performance is in DCA’s auditorium at 81 Page Road in Dublin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.
