Historic covers – Peterborough Transcript: June 18, 1953

It’s not as if the front page of the June 18, 1953, Peterborough Transcript lacked news. It was the 20th anniversary of the Peterborough Players, and New Hampshire Gov. Hugh Gregg lost a milking contest to his Maine counterpart, Burton Cross, due to the “treachery” of Gregg’s cow.

In another matter for the governor, Enoch Shenton’s “State House Journal” on Page 3 noted that Gregg said that “of course” there were subversive people in New Hampshire, but it was under control, and an effort to have legislators join Attorney General Louis Wyman’s investigation into subversive activities failed.

Therefore “… this state is relieved of the spectacle seen in Congress, where an attack on a supposed Red is considered the best publicity buildup a congressman or senator can get.”
