How devoted to his Peterborough Transcript was David M. Hopkins of Greenfield?
He had the paper delivered to Alaska, where he was leading a U.S. Geological Survey team working near the Arctic Circle approximately 150 miles from Nome. The Aug. 21, 1947, issue reported that he received the paper from airplane deliveries that brought his mail and most of the party’s food during the summer.
“Not that the Transcript believes he does so, but Hopkins could read the paper 24 hours a day where he is without the aid of artificial light. In a letter home, he said he has yet to light a lantern in the many weeks he has spent in the Alaskan camp this summer.”
