New Ipswich Historical Society will present “Contra Dancing in New Hampshire: Then and Now” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the New Ipswich Library, 6 Main St.
Folk musician and dance caller Dudley Laufman will lead the program, which traces the history of contra dancing from its colonial roots to its presence in the Monadnock region today.
The event will include stories, poems, audio recordings of callers and dancers, and live music played on fiddle and melodeon. Laufman has been involved in traditional dance and music for more than seven decades, calling his first dance in 1948. His career has included performances at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 and the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in 1999.
Laufman is a resident of Canterbury and a member of the Canterbury Orchestra. He is also a poet, songwriter and co-author of “Traditional Barn Dances.”
The program is free and open to the public and is supported by the Stearns-Burton Lecture Fund. Light refreshments will be served.
