A Newport man was arrested in Antrim May 3 after crashing his car while being chased by police.

According to the Antrim Police Department, officers received a complaint at approximately 3:40 p.m. about an unwanted man at the Sobriety Centers of New Hampshire Antrim House. The man was identified as Steven Labrie Jr., 32, of Newport.

Labrie was reported to be driving a white Acura sedan and was last seen in the Antrim downtown area. Antrim Police received information that Labrie was wanted by Newport police on the felony charge of possession with the intent to sell fentanyl.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., Antrim officer Leland Hunter spotted the Acura in the Antrim Marketplace parking lot and tried to initiate a traffic stop, at which time Labrie allegedly fled. According to police, Labrie rapidly accelerated, resulting in a pursuit on Main Street. During the pursuit, Labrie was allegedly driving recklessly on Main Street and then began traveling north on Route 31 at speeds over 100 mph.

Hunter abandoned the chase due to the danger to other drivers, and shortly thereafter, Labrie lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a guardrail on Clinton Road, disabling his vehicle in a ditch. No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported. Hunter arrested Labrie without incident.

The southbound lane of Route 31 was closed for approximately 45 minutes while officers investigated the scene and removed Labrie’s car.

Labrie was charged with reckless conduct-deadly weapon, disobeying an officer and recless operation. He was also booked and processed on his Newport warrant.

Labrie was held in preventative detention at the Hillsborough County House of Correction prior to a scheduled May 6 arraignment in Hillsborough District Court.
