Letter: Fool me once

Our commissioner of the New Hampshire Department of Education, Frank Edelblut, now in his second four-year-term, continues to work diligently in his job.

Unfortunately, his efforts are focused on undermining our public schools, diverting funds to the misguided and budget-busting voucher program without regard to the overwhelming opposition of those who testified against it three years ago. As predicted, the cost has exploded, but the State House continues to raise the income levels for this giveaway program, mostly to kids who have already left our public schools.

But wait, there’s more. A really chilling expose by NHPR reporters Sarah Gibson and Chris Haxel makes clear that Edelblut is using his office to advance his own agenda, including book-banning, promoting conservative Prager “University” (it isn’t) under the guise of GED prep for New Hampshire students and going after teachers who want to teach fact-based lessons.

Edelblut has said that he doesn’t see why he can’t decide which books are removed from our school libraries. This from someone has had no experience with public schools and has home-schooled all seven of his children. In this nonpartisan, non-political job, Edelblut is using his office and his relationship with Gov. Chris Sununu to promote his own conservative agenda. Let our school districts manage books on the shelves or units of study in the classroom.

Vote for people who will work for all of our kids, and get rid of this scary ideologue. Fool me twice, shame on me.
