The health care landscape continually evolves, with advancements in education, training and technology shaping patient care delivery.

In New Hampshire, outdated optometry laws hinder access to quality eye care. Optometrists, with extensive training, are trained to independently diagnose, treat and manage eye conditions independently. Senate Bill 440 modernizes optometric practice laws, enhancing patient access to advanced in-office procedures which are currently restricted, despite appropriate training. only performed by ophthalmologists.

In New Hampshire, access to eye care can be limited. Some counties lack ophthalmologists entirely. Optometrists are often the sole providers, ensuring statewide access to eye care. Currently, New Hampshire optometrists are denied the ability to use their full training. Limiting optometrists' abilities to treat deliver care delays care and adds costs unnecessarily.

SB 440 reduces costs, travel and wait times while improving continuity of care. The passing of SB 440 will not only address current access issues but also protect the future of the health care system. With the supply of ophthalmologists projected to decline significantly by 2035, empowering optometrists to utilize their full training and education scope of practice ensures that New Hampshire residents will continue to receive timely and comprehensive eye care.

Opposition to SB 440 cites patient safety concerns, despite optometrists safely performing these procedures in other states for decades. By embracing the capabilities of today's optometrists, policymakers can demonstrate their commitment to meeting the evolving health care needs of our community. Advocating for SB440 is not just about addressing immediate challenges, but also about ensuring a sustainable infrastructure for years to come. Let's not let outdated laws hinder progress and great patient care.
